Newcastle University significantly drops 19 places in new worldwide university ranking
The university dropped from 110th to 129th in the QS World University Rankings 2025
Emmie FosterNewcastle University has dropped 19 places following a new university ranking league table released this week.
The QS World University Ranking 2025 placed Newcastle University 129th out of 1500 universities worldwide. This comes after the university ranked 110th the year prior.
The QS ranking has labelled this list as its “largest ever” as this ranking features “1,500 universities across 105 higher education systems.” Traditionally, QS rankings have been based on academic, research, and employer reputation indicators. This year, new metrics such as sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research networks have influenced the rankings.

As Newcastle University dropped in the 2025 world ranking, this new position is almost its lowest ranking ever since 2016, from 127th in 2015 to 162nd the year after.
The universities placed before Newcastle were Stockholm University in Sweden (128th) and the University College Dublin in Ireland (127th).
Newcastle University achieved 54.5 points overall, slightly declining from the 58.6 points achieved the previous year.
In terms of academic reputation, Newcastle scored 50 points, remaining consistent with previous years. However, for employment outcomes, the university scored poorly at 31.3 compared to the 100 point scorers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Despite this, the university did score increasingly high in other areas such as sustainability and international research (97.1), international faculty ratio (89.5) and international students at 68.6 points.
Overall, the top three worldwide rankings consisted of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology located in the United States, Imperial College London and the University of Oxford.
